Stop 1

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Complete your Initial Teacher Training via PGCE, School Direct, or undergraduate route. While training, seek placements in schools with strong SEN provision or in special schools to begin building your experience with diverse learners.

Duration: 1-4 years Cost: Funded/Bursaries available
Stop 2

ECT Induction & SEN Experience

Complete your Early Career Teacher induction, ideally in a setting with good SEN provision. Volunteer for SEN-related responsibilities, work closely with the SENCo, and begin to develop expertise in differentiation, EHCPs, and working with external agencies.

Duration: 2 years Focus: Building SEN knowledge
Stop 3

SEN-Specific CPD & Qualifications

Pursue specialist training in areas such as autism, speech and language, dyslexia, or sensory impairment. Consider a PGCert in SEN, the NASENCO qualification, or specialist courses from organisations like the Autism Education Trust or British Dyslexia Association.

Stop 4

SEN Teaching Role

Apply for a dedicated SEN teaching position, whether in a special school, a resource base within a mainstream school, or a mainstream role with a specific SEN focus. Build your evidence of impact on outcomes for pupils with SEND.

Stop 5 - Final Destination

Established SEN Teacher

You've arrived at your destination. As an established SEN Teacher, you design and deliver tailored learning programmes, write and review EHCPs, collaborate with therapists and external professionals, and champion the needs of learners with SEND. You may receive a SEN allowance of £2,539 - £5,009 on top of your main salary.

Salary: MPS/UPS + SEN allowance
